Understanding Your Village Government

Batavia's local government runs on two roles that work together but do different jobs. Knowing the difference helps residents understand how decisions get made and who to turn to.

 

Village Council

Batavia Village Council is the legislative authority for the Village. Council passes the ordinances and resolutions that become local law, approves the annual budget, sets tax rates, and establishes zoning regulations. Council members set the policies and priorities that guide the Village. They do not run daily operations, which are handled by the Village Administrator and staff.

 

Mayor

The Mayor is Batavia's chief elected leader. The Mayor presides over Council meetings, works with Council to solve problems and set direction, signs local laws and official documents, and represents the Village at community events and throughout the region. The Mayor also listens to residents, helps plan for the future, and works to keep Batavia a safe and welcoming place to live, work, and visit. While the Mayor provides leadership, major decisions are made together with Village Council.

Village Administrator

The Village Administrator manages the daily operations of the Village, including staff, services, and projects, carrying out the policies set by Council and the Mayor.
