Batavia has a rich history dating back to the earliest days of Ohio's settlement. The area was first settled in 1797 by Ezekiel Dimmitt, making it one of the oldest communities in southwestern Ohio. In 1814, George Ely officially platted the village, laying out the streets and lots that became the foundation of today's community.

Batavia was incorporated in 1842 and has long served as the county seat of Clermont County, making it the center of county government, courts, and public services. Its location along the East Fork of the Little Miami River contributed to its early growth by providing water resources and supporting commerce and transportation.

Over more than two centuries, Batavia has evolved from a small frontier settlement into a vibrant village that balances its historic character with continued growth and development. Today, its historic downtown, county government presence, and strong community identity reflect the village's enduring role as the heart of Clermont County.
